Ms. Ningping Cao, an incoming PhD candidate in Applied Mathematics, has been awarded the prestigious China Scholarship Council (CSC) doctoral scholarship to fund her study at the University of Guelph for four years. Ningping will join the Department of Mathematics & Statistics in September 2017.
Apply by submitting a letter with a brief description of the conference and a detailed budget to the Mathematics and Statistics Undergraduate Awards Committee at least one month prior to the conference. Preference will be given to students presenting a paper or poster or returning to pursue graduate studies in the department. A student may be considered for this grant once only.
Entanglement is one of the key features of quantum mechanics, which allows two or more parties to be correlated in a way that is much stronger than they can be in any classical way. Entanglement also plays an important role in many quantum information processing tasks such as teleportation, quantum key distribution, and quantum computing. However, to determine whether a quantum system is entangled or not is challenging, which is in general an NP-hard problem.

We are pleased to announced that Department of Mathematics and Statistics professor Hermann Eberl, together with Dutchman's Gold Inc of Carlisle, was awarded an Engage Grant by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) for the development of a mathematical model to describe the physical conditions in Langstroth Beehives, such as temperature, humidity, and flow currents. The model will be used to analyze beehive winter configurations in extensive computer simulations.
Professor Hermann Eberl, together with professors Mark Lewis (Univ. Alberta) and Frithjof Lutscher (Univ. Ottawa) will be spearheading a Thematic Semester on Emerging Challenges in Mathematical Biology at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences in Toronto, from January to June 2018. The Fields Thematic Semester is international in scope, and will bring dozens of Long Term Visitors and Postdoctoral Fellows to Southern Ontario to engage in collaborative research on current topics in Biomathematics.
We are pleased to announce that Department of Mathematics and Statistics professor Monica Cojocaru has been awarded an NSERC ENGAGE grant. The research funded by this grant proposes to analyze changes in prevention policies against viral infections (enteric, influenza, etc.) that can be implemented in a child care setting, beyond the currently mandated ones, in accordance with current Public Health of Canada guidelines.
