Heliyon is Elsevier's Open Access mega journal (like Nature's Scientific Reports and PlosOne), published through their Cell imprint. The section editor role is similar to editor-in-chief of a traditional discipline based journal.

Professor Cojocaru has been awarded an NSERC Collaborative Research and Development grant with Sanofi Pasteur Canada to develop a small-population agent-based model of a day care facility for the purpose of testing and informing prevention policies against viral infections (enteric, influenza, etc.) that can be implemented in a child care setting.

Congratulations to Dan Ashlock for being awarded the CEPS Excellence in Undergraduate Research Supervision Award. Dan additionally makes significant contributions to graduate-level education, through teaching, supervision, and serving on the Bioinformatics Steering Committee.

We are pleased to announce that our former graduate student Vardayani Ratti (MSc 2011, PhD 2015) has accepted a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Cal State University, Chico. In her PhD thesis in our department, Vardayani developed and studied differential equation models for the disease and population dynamics of honeybee colonies that are infected with the Acute Bee Paralysis Virus, an infectious disease of the Western Honeybee that is transmitted by parasitic Varroa mites.
