BIOMS Seminar: Mathematical Medicine: Rational Guidance for Complex Problems by Sivabal Sivaloganathan, University of Waterloo

SPEAKER:   Sivabal Sivaloganathan, University of Waterloo ABSTRACT: Problems and questions arising in Medicine and the Life are very complex, often of unknown etiology. In this talk, I will give a high level view of how prudent use of Occam’s razor (or the “law of parsimony”) can often lead to significant insights and provide rational guidance for problems arising in clinical medicine.

BIOMS Seminar: Examining cancer screening adherence in Ontario using multistate transitional models, Rinku Sutradhar, University of Toronto

Understanding disparities among women in breast cancer screening adherence is of considerable interest, however prior work has been methodologically limited. Our work longitudinally examines adherence to screening, and determines factors associated with becoming adherent. The cohort consisted of 2, 537, 960 women age 50-74 from Ontario, Canada. Using age as the time scale, a relative rate multivariable regression was implemented under the 3-state transitional model to examine the association between covariates (all time-varying) and the rate of becoming adherent.
