Gary Umphrey is an award winning teacher, having won several teaching awards. 

He has a PhD in biology, with expertise in statistics, particularly in the areas of Biodiversity conservation, Biodiversity statistics, Biostatistics, Myrmecostatistics, Systematics.

He has supervised students in the areas of experimental design (bias in estimates from aliased designs, mixed full and fractional designs) and spatial point processes (as they relate to estimation of species distribution).
