ABSTRACT: The effect of melting permafrost on the Arctic climate is investigated. A simple Energy Balance model consisting of a set of differential equations describing the temperatures of air, land, and water, the concentration of carbon dioxide and methane, and the carbon stores in the soil is developed. In addition, the model incorporates seasonal variation of the solar forcing. The model uses projected carbon dioxide and methane concentrations from the Representative Carbon Pathways published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, along with additional carbon sourced from the melting permafrost. Through analysis of the model, it is determined that, melting permafrost does not significantly affect climate change in the Arctic.
